WHY USE ASSYMMETRIC FINS?

Simply unmatched in quality and performance… The TRIBAL Carbon Slalom series is designed from new profiles developed to optimally match the performance envelope of speed conditions....

The benefit of a correctly designed Asymmetric fin is that on the “ON” side, the maximum available lift can be a lot greater than an equivalent symmetric fin with the same top speed capability, and also the drag is appreciably lower. So it’s a win-win situation for really high speed sailing, and you can get away with a lower surface area. The downside is sailing the other tack, where the maximum lift will be significantly diminished.

HIGHLY OPTIMISED CONSTRUCTION PROCESS

The construction process uses a highly optimised and automated resin transfer method using aerospace grade composites and specialised precision tooling, guaranteeing a zero-void result and ultimate consistency between batches. Blades are moulded in one shot, so the structure is not compromised like it is in other fins where two halves are glued together. Traditional wet lay-up or pre-preg methods result in significantly high void count- resulting in weaker structure, shorter lifespan, pinholes requiring a surface filler and hand sanding.

DESIGN CHALLENGE

There are many trade-offs in fin design, especially when it comes down to doing really high speeds. Basically, you need to use thinner profiles as the design speed goes up. Also the more asymmetry (camber) you put into a fin, the thinner it has to be. There is less margin for manufacturing tolerances, and structural limits are quickly reached. There is also a fundamental trade-off between low speed performance and high speed capability. The details of this are beyond the scope of this introduction.

This creates a considerable design challenge. It’s easy to add some camber and make a fast fin by flattening one side of a standard foil, but what you end up with, is a sub-optimal fin that will have higher drag than necessary. It won’t be useable on the other tack, or at best this will prove very difficult. And it’s also likely to be average at both low speeds and high speeds thanks to its thickness.

TACK PERFORMANCE

So with these trade-offs in mind, we set to work on the best all-round shape to accommodate these issues, and found a nice balance that sacrifices none of the “ON” tack performances, extended out to significantly higher speeds than the earlier KA series. The “OFF” tack performance is remarkable for an asymmetric fin and offers an easy ride back upwind, without the constant spin-outs and crashes associated with other designs. On the run, these fins offer superb low drag performance and confidence to break records. These fins are of course available for both tacks.

FIN BOXES

The ASY SPEED CARBON is available in Tuttle Box only.

FIN BASE

The fin box consists of a G10 base covered with blue PU resin for easy sanding to fit your board. The full G10 base is strong and durable, and will withstand the powers which will be transferred through the fin to your board while riding.

CARBON

All Tribal Carbon fins are made in Aluminium molds, which are produced in-house, making use of an RTM process which has also been developed by us at the production facility in the Netherlands.

PROFILE

Serious R&D based on windsurfing optimized profiles has led to an unsurpassed performance in a fin.

On the run, these fins offer superb low drag performance and confidence to break records...

FAQ

My fin doesn't fit in my board...

In practice, we see many boards with different boxes, so it’s always hard to get the perfect fit for all boards. Please do not be afraid to sand the box down a bit to get the perfect fit for your board. Also be aware, that if a fin sinks a bit into the box, it is not an issue. However, a fin that sticks out above the box is an issue and needs sanding down. If you do not feel comfortable with the fit, please do not hesitate to contact us.

For which fin boxes do you produce your fins?

We make our fins in Tuttle, Deep Tuttle and Power Bases. Per model you can specify what base you would like as long as the desired base is available for that certain fin. The ASY speed fins we only produce in Tuttle Box.
